چکیده

This paper presents an analytical approach to model the bi-directional multi-channel IEEE 802.11 MAC protocols (Bi-MCMAC) for ad hoc networks. Extensive simulation work has been done for the performance evaluation of IEEE 802.11 MAC protocols. Since simulation has several limitations, this work is primarily based on the analytical approach. The objective of this paper is to show analytically the performance advantages of Bi-MCMAC protocol over the classical IEEE 802.11 MAC protocol. The distributed coordination function (DCF) mode of medium access control (MAC) is considered in the modeling. Two different channel scheduling strategies, namely, random channel selection and fastest channel first selection strategy are also presented in the presence of multiple channels with different transmission rates. M/G/1 queue is used to model the protocols, and stochastic reward nets (SRNs) are employed as a modeling technique as it readily captures the synchronization between events in the DCF mode of access. The average system throughput, mean delay, and server utilization of each MAC protocol are evaluated using the SRN formalism. We also validate our analytical model by comparison with simulation results. The results obtained through the analytical modeling approach illustrate the performance advantages of Bi-MCMAC protocols with the fastest channel first scheduling strategy over the classical IEEE 802.11 protocol for TCP traffic in wireless ad hoc networks. Multi-channel Medium Access Control Protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks: A Survey

Extensive researches on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) have been performed and many techniques have been developed for the data link (MAC) layer. Most of them assume single-channel MAC protocols. In the usual dense deployment of the sensor networks, single-channel MAC protocols may be deficient because of radio collisions and limited bandwidth. Hence, using multiple channels can significantly ...

A Finite Load Analytical Model for the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function MAC

Abstract— CSMA/CA protocols such as IEEE 802.11b are considered to be attractive MAC protocols for wireless LANs. In this paper, we extend a saturation throughput model for the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) MAC protocol to finite loads. The analytical model can help in the optimization of the protocol parameters as well as leading to the performance modeling of multi-hop a...

SRN Model for IEEE 802.11 DCF MAC Protocol in Multi-hop Ad Hoc Networks with Hidden Nodes

Since its development for WLAN, IEEE 802.11 standard has been widely used for various wireless networks due to the low cost and effectiveness in reducing collisions with simple and decentralized mechanisms. In this paper we present a novel analytical SRN model for performance evaluation of IEEE 802.11 DC F MAC protocol in multi-hop ad hoc networks in the presence of hidden nodes, taking into ac...

Analysis of the Multi-channel MAC Protocols in Wireless Networks

This paper discusses the problems that may be encountered in a multi-channel MAC protocol design. Furthermore, the normalization network throughput of multichannel MAC is analyzed based on a Markov chain model. The simulation shows that compared to single channel 802.11, multi-channel MAC can improve the normalization network throughput. Moreover, the greater is the number of divided sub-channe...
